An Anchor

Hebrews 2:1

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

Yesterday, I mentioned that [1] “pay much closer attention to” and [2] “drift away from” are nautical [relating to sailors, ships or navigation] terms.

Number 1 means to tie up a ship and Number 2 means a ship that has been carelessly allowed to drift past the harbor because the sailors forgot to attend to the steerage [part of the ship containing the steering apparatus]. Steering means to guide the course of something.

So, Hebrews 2:1 could be translated:

“We must diligently anchor ourselves to the things we have been taught, lest the ship of life drift past the harbor of salvation and be lost forever.”

Anchor: something that serves to hold an object firmly – a reliable or principal support – a mainstay.

Acts27:29-30 - Note the use of anchor .

Hebrews6:19 – The holding power of an anchor. The Word is used metaphorically for that which supports or keeps one steadfast in time of trial or doubt. An emblem of hope.

Do you know anyone slipping past the harbor of salvation? We need to warn them! They need the anchor of the Word! For ourselves, we need to remember how important it is to hold onto God's Word.
