Part VI Bible Study Ps. 19

Good morning!  It is cold here in PA but I hope wherever you are you're toasty warm!  I have an appointment with my rheumatologist this afternoon so I ask for prayer that all will go well.  Thanks.  Now, onto our study.  We are still on verse 8 but the second part - or 8b:

"The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;"

When reading this in Logos, I hovered over the word commandment and then pure & this is what came up:

4687.  מִצְוָה mitsvâh, mits-vaw´; from 6680; a command, whether human or divine (collect. the Law):—(which was) commanded (-ment), law, ordinance, precept.

1249.  בַּר bar, bar; from 1305 (in its various senses); beloved; also pure, empty:—choice, clean, clear, pure.

The reference for pure is Ps. 12:6 which says:  

The words of the LORD are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.

The Lord's perfect words present a most radical contrast with the profane words of arrogant sinners.  The purity of God's Person assures the purity of His promise.  What is that promise? enlightening the eyes...the word enlightening means this:

215.  אוֹר ʾôwr, ore; a prim. root; to be (caus. make) luminous (lit.) and metaph.):—× break of day, glorious, kindle, (be, en-, give, show) light (-en, -ened), set on fire, shine.

Every commandment of God is "pure", the psalmist said (Ps. 19:8). Its effect is "enlightening the eyes." God's Word brings spiritual truth into clear focus. But as clear as the Bible is to believers, unredeemed people can't understand it. To them it's foolishness because their minds are unenlightened (1 Cor. 2:14). In their spiritual blindness they choose humanistic philosophical speculations over God's Word. But as believers, we are continually being enlightened by the truths of God's Word as the Holy Spirit enables us to understand and apply them to our lives.  Our ability to understand the Word is a priceless gift. Let's take advantage of it daily by expanding our Bible knowledge and increasing our obedience to His precepts, divine orders, commands.
