Purposeful obedience

Hebrews 11:20 and Genesis 25:19 - 26:34
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come.

I didn't understand this verse so went to Matthew Henry commentary.  Here's what I learned.

Isaac was the long-awaited promise given to Abraham yet he was rather ordinary, passive and quiet (only 2 chapters are devoted to him in Genesis but 12 chapters each center on Abraham, Jacob & Joseph!)

Verse 20 says (Genesis 25) He [isaac] blessed them [his sons jacob & esau].  Interesting to note that we say Jacob's name 1st as does the Bible, although he was the younger twin.  Blessing them means he resigned them up to God in covenant.  He recommended God to them, prayed for them & prophesied concerning them, regarding their descendants.  But Isaac struggled.  It seems he'd forgotten how God determined at birth the matter of his sons [Genesis 25:23]. [God told Rebekah] The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.”

This should have been the rule all along but Isaac was swayed by a natural affection and by general custom that gave the double portion of honor, affection and advantage to the 1st born.  So his actions were reluctant to bless Jacob. Genesis 27:33 says "he trembled violently" and told Jacob he'd taken away Esau's blessing but finally, Isaac's faith recovered and he ratified [consent, approve, formal sanction, confirm] the blessing over Jacob.  So his faith prevailed over his unbelief  and so it pleased God to pass by this moment of weakness [of faith] to include him in the record among the elders "who through faith have obtained a good report".

So the final analysis of Isaac was that he believed God but overall, his spiritual character seemed more reluctant then firmly determined or purposeful.  You would think though, that with all the promises given to Abraham & then to Isaac, that he would have been bold and confident.  God had to prod him to finally get him to the Promised Land and once there, God repeated the covenant to him.

Is my obedience to God firmly resolved - determined and purposeful? or am I reluctant to obey? When I disobey, I forfeit joy & blessing.  I need to be purposeful in my obedience to God.
