Psalm 131

This Psalm is part of the 15 psalms that are a "song of the ascents" or a "song of degrees".  The Hebrew word translated "degree" or "ascents" comes from a root that means “to go up,” as ascending a stairway. Ten of the psalms are anonymous, four are attributed to David (122, 124, 131, 133) and one to Solomon (127). These psalms were selected to form a “hymnal” to be used by the people who went to Jerusalem for the three annual feasts—Passover in spring, Pentecost in early summer, and Tabernacles in the autumn. They sang these songs together as they journeyed in family groups to Jerusalem and this helped to focus their minds on what the Lord had done for their nation.

This Psalm, attributed to David, focuses on Jerusalem & the house of God [tabernacle].  This Psalm, teaches the humble, submissive temper of a true child of God.
Verse 1 ~ David is affirming that he is not haughty [proud] or arrogant. It gives a cross reference of Ps. 18:27 which then cross references Ps. 101:5.  "Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart, I will not endure".  We know God hates pride & arrogance.  He resists the proud & gives grace to the humble.  Why does he hate pride and arrogance so much? Because pride is essentially independence from and disobedience to God.

Holding something “high” is a general OT expression for arrogance.  Instead of striving to understand things that are outside of his understanding, David continues to trust God.  
Verse 2 ~ David testified to his humility.  If we are to be a mature spiritual believer then we need to leave the desire of proud ambition & rest in the Lord like a child rests with his mother [the child no longer needs the mother’s milk and shows maturity in its ability to wait]. This calmness David has is a result of his choices and actions.
Verse 3 ~ David called for Israel to hope in the LORD forever. To trust in Him is the opposite of pride.
