I think this is an age old question. However, I am going to give you info that you may not have known before.
1st, look up the verses in Genesis 11:1-4 and read them. I will link them for you too.
Did you know the European Union has a poster to promote it featuring a famous painting from 1563 of the Tower of Babel? Yep, they do and the inscription says, "Europe, Many Tongues, One Voice" That is their theme. Sound familiar?
Contrary to a lot of people's beliefs [read, Christian's], this passage of Scripture is not about trying to build a tower that would reach into heaven [the dwelling place of God]. Rather they are building a tower with a "top in the heavens" - up high. The city is the center of a political and economic system. The tower represents their religious system.
"Come, let us build ourselves a city [political/economic system] and a tower [religious system] with its top in the heavens..."
The intertwining of religious, economics and political systems - sound familiar? It should. It's the 3 tracks to globalism. So should it surprise us when spiritual leaders talk politics and political leaders talk spiritual?
Here is an example list of spiritual leaders who talk political:

>>Rick Warren & many other evangelical leaders
>>Tony Blair, the former British prime minister who converted to Catholicism is a politician who talks spiritual.
The pope [XVI] called for a reform of the UN so there could be true world political authority, calling for a global tax to redistribute wealth from rich countries to poor countries, redistributing energy resources worldwide so these poor countries have access to them. What this is called is sustainable development.
The initiatives for sustainable development include:
>>abortion on demand
>>population control
>>national health care
>>public housing
>> welfare entitlements
>>elimination of 2nd amendment rights
>>reduction of parental authority
>>hate crime laws
>>elimination of free speech
>>and general redistribution of wealth
In 2011, the Vatican issued another report calling for a central world bank. 22 times the report used the words "common good" which is a euphemism for communitarianism which is a mixture of socialism with capitalism.
God is not pleased with this idea as you can see from the story [which took place within 100 years of the worldwide flood in which Noah & his sons & their wives were the only survivors] in Genesis 11:5-9. They are back to being as wicked as they were before the flood and again rebelling against God by saying, "We don't need God." In Genesis 10:6, Noah's son, Ham had a son named Cush. Cush had a son [according to Genesis 10:8] named Nimrod. Nimrod began to be mighty on the earth and Genesis 10:10 says, "And the beginning of his Kingdom was Babel...in the land of Shinar."
There are other historical documents...information outside of the Bible that provide more information regarding this phase of history. Josephus, a jewish historian, wrote about the Tower of Babel & Nimrod. He explains one of the reasons they [Nimrod's people] built the Tower was because they were rebelling against God.
Karl Marx was another "against-God" warrior. He wrote the Communist Manifesto in 1848. He declared, "My object in life is to dethrone God and destroy capitalism." There are a lot of people & for a long time who have waged war against God... unsuccessfully though. In Josephus' account of the story of Babel, he adds this: one of the reasons the people of Shinar built the tower was to make it so high that flood waters would not be able to reach them if God were to change His mind and use a flood again to destroy the earth. They could then pat themselves on the back and say, "yep, we've outsmarted you this time, God. We've got a tower so high that the flood waters won't reach up here."
The mythology that developed around Nimrod reveals the heart of this religious system. Nimrod's wife, Semiramis, concocted the story that Nimrod dies & travels to the sun to become the sun god. Her goal was to deify her husband so that she, as the queen of Babylon, could retain her power. So she tells the people that Nimrod has become the sun god and has gotten her pregnant with a sunbeam....a virgin birth of sorts but she isn't a virgin, she was actually a very immoral person. The child that was born, Tammuz, is said to be the reincarnation of Nimrod. He is considered to be god incarnate and becomes the object of great worship. He gets killed by a wild boar [according to the mythology] and Semiramis weeps for 40 days. He is then resurrected. It takes place in early spring....right around Easter. Unfortunately, this is the source of the word Easter. It comes from the name Ishtar - the Babylonian god of fertility.
Most of the ways we celebrate [mistletoe at christmas, cupid at Valentine's day, Easter bunny & eggs (symbolizing fertility)] stems from this paganism. That is why I refer to this day as Resurrection Sunday [or Resurrection Weekend]. I am not going to let the culture stop me from choosing to celebrate Christ's death & resurrection or for that matter, his birth! I don't want to give acknowledgement to the pagan god of fertility, Ishtar.
So you see, much of what we see today, comes from pagan religions that go all the way back to the Tower of Babel. I hope this has given you food for thought!
